USA Envoy to Singapore

File:Deserted Speakers' Corner - Singapore (gabbe).jpg

This what Senator David Adelman said in his Senate hearing,

I intend, if confirmed, to use public diplomacy to work towards greater press freedoms, greater freedom of assembly and ultimately more political space for opposition parties in Singapore. (via)

Make no mistake, I am not a fan of politics, but I would love to see him try.

Celebrating Values Day 2010

It is here again. Honestly, this is the only event that gets me excited as an alumnus of YJC. :-D

Tickets are priced at $10/-. They can be bought at the event itself or from any existing YJCians, students and teachers alike. If you see any YJCians on the street, stop them and ask for a ticket or two.

The event will be held on the 27th Feb 2010, 9am – 5pm. It is a Saturday, exactly a month away. Cross the date out for this funfair! There is no excuses such as you have to work or it is for family only. If your family day on Saturdays, CVD makes a great event for your kids to come. There are events targeting children and teenagers. If you are lazy to wake up from a long week at work, that’s what the 5pm end-time is for. If you stay in the east side of Singapore, that is what the 5pm is for too.

This is for a good cause. Proceeds from this year’s CVD will go to Singapore Disability Sports Council. In addition, to reflect Singapore as the host city for the inaugural Youth Olympics Games, CVD ’s theme is “Fiesta de Olympic Agones” (Fiesta of Olympic Games). So do expect a day filled with games and fun!

Enough said, do visit the College’s CVD page on school website or make a reminder or two at Facebook or in your calendar!

McDonald’s is releasing Pig Doraemon!

(via @dk) Someone is listening. Hard. But all this can be avoided if someone learns how much passion the community has for a culture. Still, kudos! Sadly, I won’t be purchasing it. I didn’t intend to collect the set as there was no pig initially. A late release like this does not change the fact that I do not have a collection. Still, let us not deprive the rest and vote “YES“.

[Advertorial] Art & The Law

EDM02

Law, an inflexible concept. It never mince its words and never bend backwards.

Art, a free flowing entity. It, more often than not, gets under appreciated by society of the times, and suffer under the hand of law.

Can these two dissimilarities ever be reconciled? Art & The Law, a M1 Singapore Fringe Festival play looks at this issue in its 6th edition.

All are welcome to this thought provoking play, at the Esplanade Recital Studio, which promises to have the “socially relevant issue to be teased and grappled with”. The run is from 13 January 2010 to 24 January 2010. Tickets are available at all Sistic counters and its website.

Disclaimer: This is an advertorial done in view of Nuffnang’s give away of 3 pairs of tickets of the performance to lucky winners. As a requirement, the following question and answer set is to placed in this post.

Q: Art and the Law is the sixth edition of the M1 Singapore Fringe Festival – True or False?

A: True. As mentioned in this post and in Singapore Fringe website, Art & The Law will have its sixth run in M1 Singapore Fringe Festival 2010.

I am a Singaporean blogger who acts indepedent of Singapore Government control

The debate between Fusion Garage and Tech Crunch over Crunchpad and Joo Joo has heated up to another level. Micheal Arrington has made a sweeping statement:

techcrunch - sweeping statement

Singapore indeed does not have a free go on what can be published on the press. What is deemed as unsavory to the local population at large is censored out or left out entirely. Minor foreign news are left on the editor’s desks for days at a stretch before being published out. But it is utterly false that Singapore Government controls the bloggers in Singapore as well. We do write stuff criticising the Government, the policies and infrastructure. We never did once receive any instructions to write stuff praising the Government or censor out any unsavory parts of the post (we do remove posts if they contravene with any law at any point in time).

Embarrassing parts just is not reported? Hm, so what do you want us to report?

Do your homework first before you generalise the entire local blogsphere. The same statements you make, Micheal, Arrington, can be made against you and your fellow American bloggers. Lastly, did you not say that there won’t be another more posts on Crunchpad coming from you or TechCrunch? Tsk tsk.

P.S. Singaporean bloggers, please join the Facebook group: I am a blogger in Singapore and I am NOT controlled by the government as a form of support. A blog post from you will also help to raise awareness on how wrong Micheal Arrington is.
